When Lori D. was 8 years old she overheard a relative telling her mother that their daughter had a very good friend who was a skateboarder. She said that the skateboarder was always giving gifts that he made to her daughter, like paintings and lamps and inventions. This singular event made a tremendous impact on Lori D. and she interpreted the generosity of the gift giver, his creativity, and his being a 'skateboarder' as an inseparable combination. She became enchanted by the idea that one could always be able to offer gifts despite access to the championing all conquering monetary system. This is what drives Lori D. to create. Although this mission to be able to offer handmade things to others began on that day 8 years out of the starting gates, it was 9 more years until she began skateboarding. Lori D. has done freelance work for Slap & Thrasher skateboarding magazines, DC Shoes, and Nickelodeon. She has exhibited her paintings, live action & animated films internationally. She received her B.A. from the University of California, San Diego in Visual Arts: Media in the year 2000. She also studied Australian Film, Popular Culture, and Aboriginal Literature at La Trobe University in Melbourne Australia in 1999. She is currently a candidate for a MFA in the Experimental Animation program at Cal-Arts. Lori D. is also spending these days doing independent research on the topic of personal narrative in an oral context and its relationship to the positioning of 'self' internally and as a performance.
