Born in Hollywood
California in 1971, Liz mcgrath and family soon found themselves
clashing terribly over the strict religious environment. At
12 they sent her to stay with relatives in Hawaii, and later
a convent Singapore, her mothers native country, in hopes that
she would find god, and perhaps take up the cross where they
had left it .Though she resented being away from home, she could
hardly pretend that being around the exotic landscapes, peoples
and customs was a punishment. This environment coupled with
influences by the religious iconography inspired what was to
become her future style. On arrival back to the states, several
odd art jobs, an almost certificate of fashion from Pasadena
City College, a fanzine (Censor This) and a punk rock band later
(Tongue), her career took shape, and led her to work as an art
director for animated film and music video, which has not just
influenced her current artistic endeavors but enhanced them
as well. Liz McGrath's dioramas are static/traveling freak shows
- displaying rotting, subhuman figures luxuriously dressed for
your pleasure, perusal and contempt.
McGrath has exhibited
at Copro/Nason Gallery and La Luz de Jesus. Articles featuring
her artwork have been published in Juxtapoz and Tear
Magazine.
